The Branca chair (2011) designed by Industrial Facility and manufactured by the Mattiazzi factory. The curves flow so perfectly, one would think that such shape should be made out of plastic or metal tubes. And yet it is made out of wood. Complex forms and joints have been produced using computer-controlled robots. For each back upright of this chair, an 8-axis robotic arm cut, shaped and drilled a pre-shaped piece of wood. Traditional hand and factory methods were used to make the other parts, to finish the chair and to assemble it using wooden dowels. The sense of touch is soft and just perfect.
You can actually see the production process in a 3 minutes film at the V&A Furniture Gallery. http://vimeo.com/43785783
This is one of the best design I have seen for a chair lately. Definitely recommend it.
